SCIENTIFIC SESSIONS

Early Bird Lecture

(8:00 am to 9:00 am)
Dr. Teresa Debevc - 2017 World Workshop of Periodontitis & Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions

The results of the gathering of the 2017 World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Disease and Conditions will be presented.  This Workshop which was supported by both the American Academy of Periodontology and the European Federation of Periodontology, provided a comprehensive update of the previous disease classification established in 1999.  The highlights from these proceedings include a recategorization of various forms of periodontitis, the development of a novel staging and grading of periodontitis and the inaugural classification for peri-implant diseases and conditions.  This presentation will concentrate on the changes in the forms of periodontitis as well as the staging and grading system  of periodontitis.  This staging and grading system provides a structure for treatment planning, and monitoring a patients periodontal therapy. This staging and grading system provides a new paradigm in periodontology as it makes way for a more personalized approach to patient care.

Dr. Teresa Debevc has been a periodontist in the Edmonton area since 1995.  Her undergraduate education  was at Western University in 1990 followed by an dental residency at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario.  She practised as a general dentist in the Toronto area and then attended the University of British Columbia for her graduate Periodontics training.  After practising in the Edmonton area as a Periodontist for more than 20 years she became the discipline lead for undergraduate periodontics in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta.  She is excited to take part in the curriculum renewal in the department of Dentistry.  Part of her position has been to implement the use of the World Workshop  on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-implant Diseases and Conditions" in undergraduate dentistry.

This symposium will take the participants through a journey from diagnosis through the various modalities of cancer treatment and the oral and dental effects of treatment and its management. In addition to 5 eminent clinicians who manage head and neck cancer in Edmonton, it will also feature a head and neck cancer patient who has been through this journey.
