Lecture Synopsis

Pediatric Pearls for the General Practitioner

Dental caries remains a global health problem in children. Dental professionals play a vital role in the management of early childhood caries. Early interception with simple yet effective prevention programs can help. This course will discuss real world strategies to mitigate the burden of early childhood caries by utilizing topical enamel treatments and glass ionomer sealants. Noninvasive treatments like silver diamine fluoride and atraumatic restorative treatment can help restore cavities in a quick, effective, and painless way. Indirect pulp therapy and the Hall Technique are efficient and effective, no shot, no drill options for restoring primary molars with stainless steel crowns (SSCs). Whether you are a general dentist that enjoys treating children or a seasoned pediatric specialist, we will review tips and tricks to help increase your treatment confidence and improve clinical outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

- Review strategies for prevention of early childhood caries

- Learn topical treatment options like fluoride varnish and silver diamine fluoride (SDF)

- Describe the benefits of glass ionomer cement sealants

- Review the evidence for atraumatic restorative treatments (ART)
